Hasn’t 2018 flown by with a blink of an eye?  We are just a few days left to ring in the New Year.  For most people this will mean New Years resolutions, this may be to lose weight, feel more healthy or just to feel mentally great.  One of the best things you can do for 2019 is to set healthy habits to promote your overall well being including healthy eyecare.

Here is our Eyecare tips for 2019 for healthy eyes:

1.  Give up Smoking

Nicotine contains over 4000 chemicals of which 70 are known to be cancer causing agents.  One of the best things you can do for your eyes and overall health is to give up smoking.  Quitting smoking reduces the risk of cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.  If you are serious about stopping smoking speak to your GP about smoking cessation services available to you.

2.  Healthy Foods

Stick to a healthy diet that includes leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits and fish.  These fruits are high in anti oxidants including omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins that can reduce the progression of macular degeneration and cataracts.

3.  Excessive Alcohol Content

Excess alcohol drinking can worsen the symptoms of dry eyes.  It can also set off migraines.  If you are struggling with your drinking habits feel free to talk to your GP.

4.  Exercise Often

Exercise is great for physical and mental well being.  Exercising regularly is known to be beneficial for your eyecare by reducing macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.  Aim for 20 minutes a day by either participating in brisk walking, jogging, cycling or even swimming.

5.  Computer Eye Strain

If you spend endless amount of time staring at a computer screen whether it is for work or at home you are prone to computer eye strain.  To avoid the symptoms of computer eye strain, blink more often and take regular breaks away from your computer.

6.  Attend Eyecare Appointments

Ensure you regularly book appointments with your GP, dentist and optician.  Do feel free to talk to your optician about any concerns you may have with regards to your eyecare.

The staff at Winyates would like to wish you a prosperous 2019.
