Comprehensive Eye Test at Winyates Opticians
At Winyates Opticians, we are dedicated to providing a thorough high quality eye test for our patients. Regular eye tests are essential not only to maintain your vision but also to monitor and protect the overall health of your eyes.
An eye test can highlight pre existing conditions and not yet diagnosed health issues. Irreversible damage can often occur without noticeable symptoms. By taking care of your eyes today, you can prevent potential health complications later.
Why are Regular Eye Test Important?
Your eyes are a window to your overall eye health. It is recommended that you have an eye test once every two years to ensure your vision remains sharp and to identify early signs of eye conditions. A lot of health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and glaucoma can be picked up by an eye test. Early detection of these issues can be treated quicker.
What to expect During your Eye Test?
Our optometrists has 27 years experience. He uses advanced equipment to provide a comfortable, unhurried thorough eye examination. The eye examination lasts approximately 30 minutes to allow the optometrist to perform an indepth check of both your eyesight and eye health ensuring your vision is well corrected. Our optometrist will guide you through each step of the process, answering questions you may have and explaining each test along the way.
The Steps involved in an Eye Test:
1. Medical History and Symptoms
The first thing the optometrist will ask you is to confirm your personal details. The optometrist will then ask about your medical history, eye concerns, symptoms you are experiencing, general health, medications you are taking, family history of eye or other health conditions. We will also ask about your lifestyle as factors like screen time can affect your eyes.
2. Visual Acuity Test
We’ll assess your vision by having you read letters from a snellen chart. A snellen chart contains letters of varying sizes that is used to measure your vision (visual acuity). Initially you will be asked to read the letters without glasses. Each eye will be individually tested. You will be asked to read the letters with your left eye and then your right eye whilst the other eye is covered up. This will help the optometrist to determine to set up a base line for your distant vision.
3. Refraction Assessment
Refraction involves fine tuning your vision correction by placing a series of lenses in front of your eyes whilst you read the snellen chart again. This stage determines the precise prescription needed for near to perfect vision.
4. Eye Health Examinations
A) Opthalmoscopy
The optometrist will then use a opthalmoscope to examine the inside of your eye. This handheld instrument shines a bright light to illuminate the back of your eye allowing us to view the blood vessels and assess overall eye health. This test can help the optometrist detect signs of diseases such as diabetes.
B) Slit lamp
A slit lamp is an illuminated microscope used to examine the outer structures of the eye. It provides a magnified three dimensional view enabling the optometrist to check for signs of conditions like cataracts, diabetes and macular degeneration.
5. Additional Testing (If needed)
A) Tonometry
Tonometry is a test used to measure the pressure inside the eye by using a quick puff of air directed at the eyes surface. This test helps in detecting glaucoma a condition often linked to increase eye pressure. Tonometry is recommended for people over the age of 40 as the risk of glaucoma increases with age. (For people that do not like the puff of air test an alternative comfortable test is available for you, please ask).
B) Visual Field Test
A visual field test measures your peripheral vision by detecting how well you can see objects outside your direct line of sight. During the test, dots of light appear on a white background. Each time you spot a dot you’ll press a handheld button. This test can help to identify causes of headaches and visual nerve pathway problems.
After the Eye Examination
At the end of your eye test, your optometrist will discuss the findings with you. If prescription lenses are needed, we’ll go through our product range from single vision lenses to bespoke premium varifocal lenses or contact lenses and the best coatings for your lenses. Our team will guide you through frame selection to find a style that meets your fashion sense, lifestyle and budget.
If you need extra assistance with low vision, we offer tools like illuminated magnifiers to enhance your everyday vision.
In cases where any health concerns are detected, we’ll provide appropriate referrals to specialists.
